MOR - DunesItinOnly for off road bikers with experience in the sand, probably our most challenging offroad tour anywhere. A total of 8 days, 6 days biking, a day off plus days of arrival and departure. Dunes, dunes and more dunes: if you just want more sand and dunes then this is the tour for you. We head southwest out of Ouarzazarte on our way down to the dunes at Chegaga (50 km of never ending dunes) before turning east via the dunes at Erg Lihoudi and the fast Dakar pistes of '07, ending up at Erg Chebbi via the beautiful dunes near to the village of Remlia. The tracks on this tour are 90% different to all other Morocco tours.

Day 1 Arrive Ouarzazarte.

Day 2 Ouarzazate – Erg Chegaga (280 km, 100% offroad). Leaving Ouarzazate we take to twisting trails in the lower foothills of the High Atlas, interspersed with many sandy riverbeds. This is followed by a fast piste west before turning south to travel a 30 km section of very sinuous mountain tracks. The final 70 km before we get to our destination at a semi permanent bivouac at the base of the highest dune in Chegaga, is a fast, flat piste with your first taste of dunes (50 km2 of dunes ranging from 1 to 80 m in height). From the bivouac nothing but dunes and desert to be seen in all directions. After your hard days biking how about enjoying the bivouacs very own hammam 'beldi'? (Turkish bath). Isolation from the normal world with total silence, starry skies and no light pollution. Campfire and local musicians most nights.

Day 3 Erg Chegaga – Ouzina Rimal (270 km, 98% offroad). This day we will be following a long stretch of one of the Dakar 2007 routes, with 15 km spent traversing the dunes of Erg Lihoudi - maximum 40 m high. You will also be attempting to get to the top of John's favourite dune - only 80 m in height it has to be ridden along the ridge in order to reach the top - all 800 m of twisting ridge. The reward, awesome unending views across the desert. The last 40 km are made up of 6 km in the fesh-fesh (bull dust) and 14 km of smaller dunes (max 70 m) leading to Ouzina Rimal, our third night in a bivouac in the desert.

Day 4 Ouzina Rimal – Erfoud (100 km, 100% offroad). Some 50 km of deeply rutted, sandy and twisting riverbed interspersed with fesh-fesh and sand dunes - a nice mixture for the ultimate test. We pop out at Erg Chebbi. We will be travelling the full length of Erg Chebbi from south to north cresting every cathedral dune along the 24 km stretch (there are more than 20 cathedral dunes, all over 100 m high).A further 45 km of fast piste traveling north to get to our luxury hotel at Erfoud with swimming pool, wonderful buffet meals, unusual bedrooms and public areas, and a bar!!

Day 5 Erfoud (free day). Buffet lunch near the pool.

MOR - Dunes8Day 6 Erfoud – Tineghir (160km). Straight out behind our hotel and we are immediately in the sand dunes. A total of about 98 km in virgin desert with no tracks before our picnic lunch stop in a palmeraie. We navigate by GPS through small dunes and dry riverbeds. After lunch we wind our way through the palmeraie and its villages - great care needed as many children here. Refueled, the remaining days riding is across a very fast desert section followed by a 14 km road detour to go and visit the Todra Gorge, one of Morocco's premiere attractions. Night in our Kasbah style hotel.

Day 7 Tineghir – Ouarzazarte (160 km). Leaving Tineghir we head up into the Jebel Sahro mountain range, considered some of the most beautiful mountains in Morocco. A 98 km loop brings us back down to Boulmalne de Dades. After refueling we have about 10 km on a winding road in the fertile Dades Gorge before taking to the trails again into the southern foothills of the High Atlas. Picnic lunch on the trails. Passing through the 'Valley of the Roses', a further 50 km brings us out onto a wide open plateau with distant views of the mountains. The remaining trails back to Ouarzazarte are pleasant and winding with some sand. Back to our hotel of the first night.

Day 8 Depart Ouarzazate.
